About me

"Wealth is the ability to fully experience life." - Henry David Thoreau

How I got here

I hail from a traditional farming family in Vietnam and spent my formative years surrounded by the serene landscapes of rice fields. In a picture you'll find nearby, there's my brother and me, standing on our ancestral farmland – a snapshot encapsulating the simplicity and richness of our heritage. Growing up, I attended local schools near Chinatown in Ho Chi Minh, navigating a world where the aroma of the earth and hard work intertwined seamlessly. Among the many cherished moments of my youth, I hold a special place for my memories at Hong Bang Middle School, a captivating institution where the beauty of French-style architecture blends harmoniously with the lush greenery of ancient trees. It was here that my close-knit group of friends first began to nurture grand aspirations amid the bustling tapestry of life and the backdrop fragrance of traditional Chinese medicine. For my high school education, I was fortunate to attend Le Hong Phong, an esteemed institution steeped in colonial-era history.

Driven by a thirst for broader experiences, I embarked on a transformative path by pursuing higher education in the United States. Through a scholarship, I ventured into my academic journey at UT Dallas, a significant step beyond the familiar landscapes of my youth. Discovering the explorer inside me through engaging with insightful and nurturing educators in a tranquil suburban setting rendered this the most beautiful phase of my life. Subsequently, I seized the opportunity to further my studies at the University of Maryland where I transitioned from being a fledgling theorist to mastering the art of experimental quantum physics, an evolution of learning that culminated in the completion of my Ph.D.

Following this milestone, I was presented with an irresistible opportunity to conduct advanced quantum research at UC Berkeley and Berkeley Lab, where I led the efforts to explore novel quantum devices. This phase marks my dedication to advancing research and knowledge in my field. Presently, I am immersed in my work at the AWS Center for Quantum Computing, contributing to the vibrant quantum research community as I continue to explore and innovate in the realm of quantum physics.

Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'

Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;

Man got to tell himself he understand.”

Why I do what I do

Simply put, I seek to know more about the world around me, and through this journey,  cultivate an ever deeper understanding about myself.

Between 60,000 and 90,000 years ago, humans initiated their migration out of Africa, an ongoing journey that eventually led us to inhabit every viable corner of the planet. In 1909, Robert Peary accomplished the remarkable feat of reaching the North Pole after enduring a grueling 37-day trek across icy terrain by dogsled. In 1911, Roald Amundsen became the first to reach the South Pole in a historic race, triumphing over his competitor Robert Scott and his team, who tragically perished during their expedition. We even went beyond: On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 successfully landed on the moon, marking an extraordinary triumph in the history of space exploration.

Growing up, I always harbored a deep curiosity about the motivations driving human endeavors. Roald Amundsen, relentless in his pursuits, pressed on to discover the Northeast Passage. Earnest Shackleton, undeterred by the harrowing Endurance ordeal that left his crew stranded on Elephant Island for months, embarked on further maritime expeditions. The Wright brothers persisted with their test flights, even after one of them suffered a severe injury in an accident. In 1947, Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl constructed a rudimentary raft by lashing balsa logs together with hemp rope. He set sail from Callao, Peru, on a journey across the Pacific, aiming to prove that South American natives might have reached Polynesia long before Christopher Columbus's time by navigating on similar primitive rafts. Lying at the heart of these tales is our wanderlust. It is this unquenchable thirst for exploration and discovery that propels us forward as individuals and as a civilization. It's the force that transforms the impossible into the possible and the unimaginable into reality.

We are all born with an insatiable curiosity, a burning desire to explore the unknown, and to discover what lies beyond our current understanding. This innate quality is the foundation of our progress as a species, driving us to push boundaries, challenge norms, and unlock the mysteries that surround us. Throughout history, our pursuit of exploration and discovery has led to remarkable achievements. It's the reason we sail uncharted waters, climb towering peaks, and venture into the depths of the unknown. Our yearning to unravel the secrets of the cosmos, dive into the unexplored depths of our oceans, and delve into the mysteries of science and technology has fueled monumental breakthroughs that have shaped our world.

We are the inheritors of an extraordinary legacy. From the brave explorers who set sail into the horizon with no certainty of what lay ahead to the intrepid scientists who unlock the secrets of the universe, each one of them embodied the spirit of exploration that resides within us. Today, that spirit lives on within every one of us. It's in the dreams we chase, the challenges we embrace, and the uncharted paths we choose to walk. It's the audacity to ask, "What if?" and the courage to pursue the answers, even when the path is uncertain. In the face of adversity, it's this unyielding spirit of exploration that propels us forward. It's the belief that no challenge is insurmountable, no horizon is unreachable, and no problem is unsolvable. It's the relentless pursuit of knowledge, the hunger for discovery, and the courage to venture beyond our comfort zones that define who we are.

So, let us embrace this spirit of exploration, not just in the physical sense but in every facet of our lives. Let's explore the uncharted territories of our minds, seek out new opportunities, and fearlessly chase our aspirations. Let's dare to innovate, to create, and to dream big. I urge you all to embrace this innate desire to explore, to discover, and to relentlessly pursue the unknown. Because within that pursuit lies the key to unlocking our greatest potentials and shaping a future that transcends our wildest imagination.

“I do not care so much what I am to others as I care what I am to myself.”

Michel de Montaigne
